The Effects of PERMA Based Music Activities on Depression, Interpersonal Relationship and the Life Qualities of the Elderly Mild Dementia Patients in Long-Term Care Facilities

Abstract
This research is to find out the effect of PERMA based music activities on depression, personal relationship, and quality of life in patients with mild dementia in long-term care facilities. The participations are 80 elderly patients from 4 Facilities in Kyunggi, agreed to participate, aged 65 above with MMSE-K score between 18¢¦23. The experimental group consisted of 38, and the control group consisted of 42 patients. Also, after conducting a pre-test the experimental group participated in 16 sessions of a 50-minute PERMA based music activities. Post-test are conducted after the program. The tools are used the Korean version of the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia (CSDD), reconstructed version of In Ok Hwang's(2002) personal relationship scale and Korean Version of Quality of Life-Alzheimer's Disease (QoL-AD). The results are as follows. First, the depression score of the experimental group was meaningfully decreased compared to the control group. Second, the personal relationship score of the experimental group showed a significant increase in all the sub-items. Third, the quality of life score of the experimental group was meaningfully increased compared to the control group. These findings suggest that PERMA-based music activities are effective in reducing depression, improving interpersonal relationships and quality of life of elderly with mild dementia in long-term care facilities.
